Hanging water

2008
Installation of wood, PE lines, thousands of plastic bags filled with water
Size: 11/7/2.50m

The installation has been commissioned by De Galerij, Drachten: the gallery in Theatre De Lawei . They asked me to make a water installation because the theme for the program of the theatre was "Water".
The installation was a wooden cubic construction . On the wooden laths I hung thousands of PE lines at the same distance. On each line I hung one plastic bag filled with the same amount of clear water.
I placed the installation in the trajectory of the low winter sunbeams that came through the windows. Exactly where a sunbeam struck the PE line I hung the plastic bag with water and I cut off the rest of the line which fell on the floor. There appeared a pattern of huge drops, which looked like baroque chandeliers.
Depending of the light there was a different image of the installation and a different reality.
In the daytime when the electrical lights were out in the gallery, the installation caught and reflected all the daylight and the plastic bags with water looked like black drops.
When the lights went on in the gallery, there appeared the chandelier, with in each bag a reflection of all lights.
When it was dark outside there appeared another installation in the windows of the gallery. This virtual installation entered into an interaction with the lights outside of the cars and the bikes, buildings, etc.. Two different worlds merged into another reality and this reality got into interaction with the reality of the installation and the lights inside and the presence of thousands of galleries upside down in the bags.
