Breathing cube

2006
Installation made of wood, staples, 10.000 PE lines all 3.00 m long
Size: 30/12m and a variable height of 0.50- 3.00m

In the dunes of the isle of Ameland I made a wooden cubic frame around a dune.
I hung 10.000 white plastic lines (PE) on the laths of the cube. Each line had a length of 3.00m.
I winded each line 3 times around my finger and than stapled it on to the lath at the same distance.
This nearly industrial rhythm in the installation became a world of its own and entered into interaction with the natural rhythm in the dunes.
Each weather type caused another image of the installation. When the wind was blowing the lines moved in contrast with the grasses. When the wind has abated the lines lay down on the ground in patterns that are suggestive of the structures in the sand on the beach, caused by the wind.
When the sun was shining, there appeared new graphical patterns of lines and planes caused by shadows in the installation and the perception of the installation changed.
Looking with your face towards the sun, there was a glittering impenetrable massive white block to be seen. Looking out of the sun the installation was transparent.
